ADVENTURE

The grand tour from north to south

          Ref. GRBH

This is one of our classic and most beloved itineraries. However, this year accommodation is upgraded to hotel and the famous Eqi Camp is included!

The “grand tour" with guide is the tour of contrasts. Walking tours through untouched nature. Small settlements, hunting communities and modern city life. Green mountains and icebergs. Flowering valleys and cold glaciers.
And now, the famous Ice Camp Eqi!

On this 12-days roundtrip you will experience almost everything there is to experience in Greenland. The trip ideally alternates between day-hikes in the Greenland nature, city sightseeing and transportation by boat, plane and coastal ship.

Day 1. Flight Copenhagen - Ilulissat

You depart with Air Greenland from Copenhagen to Ilulissat with a short stop over in Kangerlussuaq. Just before landing in Ilulissat you fly over the beautiful Ilulissat Icefiord where you get żour first impression of the gigantic icebergs.

Upon arrival your guide will meet the group in the airport and take you to your hotel for check-in. After check-in there will be a thorough information meeting where the guide will, off course, welcome you and breafly go over the programme for the next days.

In the afternoon the guide will take you around town and you will also get to see the huge icebergs in the Ilulissat Icefiord.

Accomodation is at Hotel Icefiord, which is situated on a small hill with a view over the bay, the icefiord and even to the Disco Island some 70 km away. A perfect place for your stay in Ilulissat.
Days 2-3. Camp Eqi at the Eqi glacier

On this day we sail north to Eqi, the calving glacier that lies a few hours of saling north of Ilulissat.

The Eqi glacier which runs into the fjord, 80 km north of Ilulissat is one of the most beautiful places in Greenland. You can get close to the edge of the glacier by boat or feet and see the calving process. During our two days in Eqi you are sure to see the glacier calving.

The sound of the active glacier is quite remarkable while the sight of icebergs toppling into the water is breathtaking. The trip to Eqi is by modern and comfortable tourist boat.

Overnight accommodation in cabins at Ice Camp Eqi. We walk to the beautiful glacier where the silence is broken by the glacier’s constant calving.
Days 4-5. Ilulissat, hike to the icefiord

We sail back to Ilulissat, where we spend two nights at Hotel Icefjord.

Only a couple of kilometres from town is the lush valley of Sermermiut that extends down to the ice fjord. In 1727, this was the site of Greenlands then largest settlement with 250 people. Later excavations have shown that this beautiful valley had been inhabited for thousands of years.

We take a hike to Sermermiut and experience the huge icebergs floating in the fiord at close range.
Days 6-8. by coastal ship to Nuuk

We continue our journey by the coast ferry from Ilulissat to Nuuk. You have a cabin on the boat.
We sail along the west coast of Greenland and there a short stops at Aasiaat, Sisimiut and Maniitsoq.

In Nuuk we are accommodated at Hotel Hans Egede for one night. Hotel Hans Egede is situated in the main center of Nuuk.

One of the good places in Greenland for whale watching is Nuuk — from early June through out October there is a great certainty for spotting Humpback whales just outside the town of Nuuk. Besides watching these fantastic animals, the town of Nuuk also have a lot more to offer raging from Cultural activities to hiking and boot excursions.

In Nuuk you should not miss the opportunity to visit the local museum, the national museum of Greenland, and see the famous mummies which were found in the Uummannaq area in the late 1970's. These mummies are so well preserved that you can see their clothing, hair etc.
Days 9-10. Igaliku in South Greenland

Flight from Nuuk to Narsarsuaq, after which we sail across the fjord to Itilleq. From here we take an hour’s walk to the sheep farming settlement of Igaliku, which is situated at the head of Igaliku Fjord surrounded by green fields with steep, bare mountains as a backdrop.

It was here in Igaliku that the Norse bishopric at Gardar was situated. The ruins of the episcopal residence and the tiny cathedral are today visible between the settlement’s houses and kitchen gardens. Accommodation for two nights at the hostel.
Day 11. Qassiarsuk and Narsarsuaq

We walk back to Itilleq and board a boat to the settlement of Qassiarsuk. We visit the ruins of Eric the Red’s settlement and the reconstructions that were built in connection with celebrations of the Millennium of Leif the Lucky’s discovery of America and the introduction of Christianity to Greenland.

We then sail on to Narsarsuaq where we stay at Hotel Narsarsuaq for one night.

We are in the middle of the ancient Norse realm and Qassiarsuk is the very place where Greenland’s Norwegian colonizer Erik the Red first settled. The ruins and the reconstructed Viking farm as well as the church afford a fascinating insight into past life in the region.
Day 12. Flight Narsarsuaq to Copenhagen

The tour guide says farewell to the group in Narsarsuaq. We depart for Copenhagen around midday and arrive in Copenhagen in the evening.
