WHAT TO BRING

What to bring - Trekking by the Ice Cap in the land of the Norse

For all of our trips we have made a detailed pack list based on prior experiences. The list should be regarded as guidance only; it is not a list of what you must bring.
As every person has individual requirements, we will only give you an idea of what you might need. However, in our experience the following things are useful.

Luggage Regulations

The general baggage allowance per passenger (both checked and carry-on luggage) depends on the policies and safety concerns of the particular airline. Information on baggage allowance will be stated on your personal site" My Topas Travel" 60 days prior to departure.

You are only allowed to take small quantities of liquids in your hand luggage:
- These liquids must be in individual containers with a maximum capacity of 100 millilitres each.
- You must pack these containers in one transparent, re-sealable plastic bag measuring approximately 20 x 20 cms
You must present all liquids carried to the screeners at security checkpoints for examination.
You can still carry in your hand luggage medicines and dietary requirements, including baby foods, for use during the flight with a capacity of more than 100 millilitres. You will be asked for proof that they are genuine.
Further, you cannot take any objects in your hand baggage that can cause injury to yourself and other passengers. This includes Pointed/edged weapons and sharp objects, such as hiking staffs, any pocket knives, scissors, knitting needles etc. You are only allowed to take these items in your hold baggage (bags you check in).
Luggage on your trip

On this trip you will on several occasions need to transport your luggage from one place to another. For that reason we strongly recommend that you pack your personal belongings in a large backpack of 50-80 liters. Alternatively you can pack in a duffle back or carpetbag. A hard suitcase is not suitable on this trip as the small boats we use for transportation of our luggage do not have room enough for hard suitcases. It is easier and more flexible to stack up soft bags.

We recommend that you pack your bags waterproof. You might want to bring large plastic bags in order to make the bag waterproof from the inside.

In addition you should bring a day backpack for what you will need during the day on the trek. We recommend a backpack of 30-40 liters. A backpack of this size is of better carrying comfort than a smaller one. This can be used as hand baggage as well.
Climate

The average day and night temperature in Narsarsuaq and the surrounding area for June and September is between 12-17 degrees C. The nights are generally cold but as the sun gains power during the day, temperatures often rise over this average. Due to the sun and dry air these temperatures fell warmer than they would further south in Europe. Night temperatures can occasionally reach freezing point. Rain can of course occur but at this time of year the weather is generally dry and clear giving us a good visibility.
Hiking boots

Solid hiking boots with a rough patterned hard sole and good ankle support is recommended, as the terrain can be very uneven and slippery with no tracks. Be sure your boots are proper worn in shape. It is a good idea to travel with your boots on or to carry them in the hand luggage in case of your luggage being delayed.
Other footwear

Light footwear, e.g. sandals, to change into at the end of the day.
Water bottle

You can bring one or more 0.5 or 1 litre bottles containing the total amount of 1.5 litre. There is plenty of fresh water available while we are walking.
Hiking Staffs

It is very individual whether you have the benefits of using hiking staffs. The staffs can relieve your knees by descents. Others do use staffs only by ascents. Only at times when hiking through rocky passages, the staffs can be in the way.
Hiking Wear

    1 warm cap
    1 pair of warm gloves
2 pair of thick hiking socks
Possibly 2 pair of thin inner socks
1-2 pair of light hiking pants/shorts
    Woollen or moisture wicking underwear
    1 thin woollen jersey
    1 fleece or woollen sweater
1 rain and wind proof jacket with hood
1 pair of rain pants (rain poncho is a good alternative to rain gear)
